About the Department of Operational Support (DOS)

The internship position is located within the Office of the Director in the Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH), which operates under the Office of Support Operations (OSO), Department of Operational Support (DOS).

The DOS provides end-to-end operational support to the UN Secretariat, regional commissions, offices away from headquarters, and peace operations worldwide. Within DOS, the DHMOSH plays a critical role by managing medical entitlements, occupational health, clinical governance, counselling services, and public health policies across the UN system. Its mission is to ensure a safe, healthy, and efficient workforce that supports the UN’s global peace, stability, and humanitarian goals.

Key Responsibilities

Interns will work under the overall supervision of the Medical Director/Senior Medical Officer within the Public Health Unit of DHMOSH. Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting in the development of health-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), plans, and guidelines for UN Headquarters and field duty stations.
  • Supporting IT-related projects, such as preparing and analyzing health datasets for DHMOSH.
  • Monitoring and reviewing global health policy developments relevant to UN operations.
  • Preparing, proofreading, and editing official documents for accuracy, grammar, and consistency.
  • Conducting targeted research, locating policies, and reviewing academic or institutional documents.
  • Supporting content creation for web platforms, print, events, and multimedia publications.
  • Helping organize special events, meetings, and training sessions.
  • Drafting reports and contributing to knowledge-sharing activities.
  • Assisting with case management and data collection in health-related projects.
  • Performing other duties assigned by supervisors to strengthen healthcare management in UN operations.

This variety of responsibilities provides interns with exposure to administration, policy-making, healthcare systems, and organizational coordination—key skills for careers in international institutions.

Qualifications and Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet the United Nations Internship Programme requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate program (second university degree or higher); OR
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final year of a bachelor’s degree program.

No professional work experience is required, but candidates should demonstrate:

  • Strong research, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • An academic background in public health, administration, international relations, IT, or related fields is highly desirable.

Language Proficiency

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Knowledge of other UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.

Visa and Administrative Requirements

  • Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must secure the appropriate visa to undertake the internship in the United States (e.g., G-4 visa).
  • Interns are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and living costs.
  • The UN does not provide financial remuneration.
